Gel Candle Wicks

I prefer to use zinc-core
wicks in my gel candles. There are advantages and disadvantages in using
them though.
One advantage is that they
make the wick stiff enough to stand up well in you candle.
Another advantage is that they burn longer and hotter which is what
you need for burning gel candles.
One disadvantage is that
mushrooms will form as they burn. These mushrooms need to be clipped off.
Before you light a candle always clip the wick to ¼” above the wax.
I also recommend t-tabs on
your wicks. The tabs should be at least 7/16” tall. If you do not have
the t-tabs, you can string glass beads on to your wick to extinguish the
flame before it reaches the bottom of the container.
You can get glass beads

If your wicks are
pre-primed with wax, you need to remove this first before you set it in
the container. The wax will cause cloudiness in your gel as it melts off.
You can remove this by laying them on a paper towel lined cookie
sheet and baking them for about 15 minutes at 200 degrees. Be sure to keep
an eye on them though, if they start to turn brown remove them
immediately.
You can wrap the wick
around a skewer or a pencil laid across the top of your container. A
couple of other ideas are to use “stuck together” chopsticks to pinch
the wick and hold it up, or use two Popsicle sticks held together at one
end with a rubber band or tape to hold the wick in place.
Wick size best suited for gel candles are as follows:
44-24-18 are best used in votives, and small containers.
60-44-18 are best used in 2” to 31/2” diameter containers.
60-44-18 are best used in 3” to 4” diameter containers
Larger containers will require multiple wicks.
Test your wicks first:
1. If your candle smokes – Your wick is too big.
2. If your candle leaves a large part of the wax unburned on the sides of you container – Your wick is too small.
