Why Are My Gel Candles Cloudy?

A growing concern to new and inexperienced gellers is how to keep their gel candles from getting cloudy.

Nobody wants to spend time setting up a seascape gel candle, pouring it and hours later discovering that it turned so cloudy you can't see the embeds.

There are several reasons for this which we will discuss here:

  1. Too Much Fragrance.  If you overload your gel with too much fragrance you could get cloudiness.

Use ½ ounce of fragrance in 1 pound of low density gel.

Use ¾ ounce of fragrance in 1 pound of med. density gel.

Use 1 ounce of fragrance in 1 pound of high density gel.

These measurements are by weight not volume.

  2. Dirty Embeds. Sea shells, pebbles, glass embeds etc. should all be washed and thoroughly dried before use.

  3. Sand. Most gellers making a seascape gel candle want sand in the bottom of it. There is no reason why you can't. I use a little trick to prevent cloudiness and excess bubbles from sand by setting all the embeds in place, then pouring in just enough heated gel to cover the sand completely. Let it set till cool and then pour the rest of the heated gel to 1/4" from the top of the container.

  4. Wax on wicks. Wax on your wick will melt off when you pour the hot gel in the container. This will cause cloudiness. I usually heat a small amount of gel in a pan, drop the wicks in and let most of the wax melt off. You need to watch them though. As soon as most of the bubbles are out of the wick, remove them with a fork and let them cool on a paper towel. If you leave them in the hot gel too long they will burn and turn brown.

  5. Wax Embeds. Using low melt point wax embeds or gel that's too hot can cause your candle to get cloudy. If you make your own embeds use a high melt point pillar wax for them and pour the gel at 185 degrees or lower to reduce or eliminate embed melting. If you buy your embeds, ask them at what temperature they recommend pouring the gel at.

  6. Moisture in the Gel. Moisture will cause cloudiness in your candle. NEVER heat gel in a covered pan. This can cause condensation to develop in your gel. Make sure your pan and utensils are dry before use. And store your gel in a dry location.

  7. Mixing in Fragrance. Make sure you mix your fragrance thoroughly into your hot gel. Mix slowly though to avoid bubbles developing in the gel. DO NOT USE WOODEN OR PLASTIC UTENSILS!

  8. Always Remember. When making gel candles less is always better. Less fragrance, less dye, less glitter. It takes very little of these things to make a nice attractive, fragrant gel candle.
