What is Candle Gel?

Candle gel is made of 95% mineral oil and 5% polymer resin. When the resin is  mixed with mineral oil and cooked, it turns into a crystal clear gel. Penreco is the company that manufactures the gel and holds the patent for it. This is the brand of gel I recommend for all your gel candles. Here is one of the companies I buy gel from: creativeilluminations

Gel Safety

Here is a list of safety factors everyone should abide by. It is you and I who make this craft fun and we are also responsible for making it safe. Please make your candles with these safety precautions in mind. Don’t sell or give away any candle if you are not sure it’s safe to burn!! There is a huge market for these candles and you can sell them at Craft Shows, on the Internet etc. There are a lot of people selling them on ebay.

  • NEVER melt gel over 220 degrees. If your gel starts to smoke, remove it from the heat source immediately.
  • NEVER use water to put out a gel fire. Use baking soda or cover it with a towel.
  • NEVER leave the room when melting your gel.
  • If you spill gel on yourself, immediately flush it with cold water to prevent burning.
  • Do not let gel go down the drain. It can clog up the pipes.
  • If you are going to sell or give away your candles, make sure you attach a warning label on the bottom or print out a safety card to give with the candle.
  • ONLY burn the candle to about 1/2” from the bottom.
  • KEEP wax away from open flames.
  • ALWAYS use a thermometer. Make sure that you always know your gel’s temperature.
