All About Gel Candle Dyes - Candle Color
Gel candles are beautiful even without candle dye - candle color. I recommend using liquid candle color (dye) made specifically for gel candles. I also suggest using UV Inhibitor.
Get UV Inhibitor here: http://www.rusticscentuals.com/wicks.html
UV Inhibitor will keep the candle color from fading. If you place a candle in direct sunlight the color will fade over a short time. I’ve experimented with this and it’s TRUE! I made a beautiful purple wine candle color and let it sit on a sunlit windowpane. Within a few hours almost all the candles color was faded away and I was left with an ugly light purple gel candle. I tried another one with the UV inhibitor and left it on the same windowpane for days with no change to the candle color.
You don’t need much liquid dye for gel candles unless you want to make a dark color and don’t want to see through it. If I’m only making one candle I will tint my gel with a small amount on a toothpick and stir it into the gel. You can always add more, but you can’t remove it once it’s in there. If I’m using a whole pound of gel I will add candle color one drop at a time until I get the color I want. To check the gel for the color I use a small clear glass to pour it into. This way I can tell what the color will be once I pour the candle. When the gel is cool peel it out of the glass, put it back in the pan and heat it again. If it’s not dark enough, I just add a little more and test it all over again.
You can use wax based dyes but if you add too much it will cloud the gel. I don’t recommend using this kind of dye.
If you have a color wheel it’s easy to mix your own colors from just the primary colors. This will take a little practice though.
