Clear Pillar Gel™: Make a gel candle without the container.  

 Introduction      

When container gel was introduced as a product for candle making it created a new type of candle maker, the Geller.  Gellers took hold of the product and created a new market place with exciting and original designs generated by very talented people.  However, since gels inception the product has been limited to glass containers, in most cases.  The reason for this involves technology and availability. Until approximately 2000 gellants could not hold shape and freely stand due to high temperatures generated by the flame of the candle.  Additionally, availability was limited because the chemical components needed to produce free standing gel candles were sold separately. Only large candle manufacturers had the capability of combining these components into the proper blend. 

All this changed in early 2002 when Candlewic took the technology available for clear pillar gel candles and offered it pre- blended, no components to mix.  Just melt, add fragrance, color, wick and then pour.

Important Facts About The Clear Pillar Gel Candle Base™    (ClearPillarBase)  

Most candles that have smooth surfaces (votive, standard pillars) should have this glaze applied to eliminate the fingerprinting, "greasy feeling" and to truly enhance the translucency and shine of the finished candle. Candles with rough textures, tapers and designs such as the spiral sphere and figures may not need a glaze. To determine if you need to apply the glaze, you should review how extensive the finger printing is on the candle.

The clear pillar base is particularly susceptible to fingerprinting. This product will eliminte the fingerprinting as well as add a high gloss coating. This product is available only in HDPE 2 lb. containers.

Fragrances must have non-polar characteristics and have flash points above 170° F. These are essential to ensure the safety of the candle.

Product Highlights    The Clear Pillar Gel Candle Base™ is a polyamide based candle resin that is created from patented technology. The working/processing temperatures of the product are 200°F. to 210°F. with a melting point of 185° F.

Fragrance Selection
There are certain characteristics that you must look for in the fragrances to ensure solubility and compatibility. The fragrances must have non-polar characteristics and have flash points above 170° F. These are essential to ensure the safety of the candle. The recommended fragrance load is 3 - 6%. Higher fragrance loads will jeopardize the safety of the burning candle.

Color Selection                                                                                              

There are no known safety concerns in regard to the type of dyes used in the product. The dyes used should leave no sediment and should be oil soluble and heat stable. Dyes should be used at a minimum, using too much dye can affect the translucency of the candle. (Color Wafers) 

Melting                                                                                                

Safely melt as you would melt container gel.

Pouring
Once the desired amount of the product is ready for melting, heat it to 200° - 210° F., then add color until blended. Right before pouring add the fragrance and mix. Pour it into the mold between 200°F. -210°F.  If a repour is necessary it is imperative to do it 4 to 7 minutes after the initial pour at a temperature slightly higher than the original pouring temperature. Cool at ambient temperatures.

Mold Selection and De-Molding This product can be de-molded quickly. De-molding will require a little experience depending on the type of mold you choose. Practicing using the product is suggested so don’t add your color or fragrance until you are comfortable working with it.  Most if not all molds can be used with this product. Two piece, silicone and polyurethane molds are the easiest. By slightly changing the way in which you use aluminum molds they too work.

Wick Selection        One of many unique features of the Clear Pillar Gel™ is the burn; the burn will offer you unmatched beauty. When choosing a wick you want to find a wick that is going to leave 1/2" or greater of product left beyond the melt pool. This is necessary to assist in the burn as well as aiding in the beauty of the burn. The correct wick will offer increased burn times. In test burns, a 3" ball candle burned for over 72 hours. The selection will start with the type and size of candle you are making. The type of color and amount of fragrance will affect the size, also. Flat braided, CD, HTP and HZL series of wicking are all very effective.  It is also very important that the wick be centered properly or leaks could happen.
