Steps To Make Your Candle

Here are the general steps for every candle – These are basic steps for most candles. Print out these instructions to refer back to when using the recipes.

1.      Set up your workspace. You can place newspaper or paper towels over your work space if you like, but gel wax is fairly easy to clean up with hot soapy water.

2.      Get all you equipment ready to use: pan, utensils, measuring cups, spoons, scales, thermometer, etc, ready.

3.      Prepare your containers. Wash and completely dry them.

4.      Set the wick in the containers. I usually put a little hot glue on the wick tab and then stick it to the bottom center of the container.  I also use two skewers held together with a rubber band or tape then slip the wick in between the skewers. This keeps the wick centered and straight. (I will refer to this as a wick holder in the recipes).

5.      Add you embeds if any now. If they have air pockets or holes make sure to dip them in melted gel filling up the holes first and let them cool.

6.      Melt you gel on low heat. Pull the gel apart into small pieces so it will melt faster. VERY IMPORTANT: Use your thermometer and make sure your gel doesn’t heat up over 220 degrees. If it begins to smoke quickly remove it from the heat source.

7.      Add the scent. REMEMBER: Stir in very slowly. Only use ¾ - 1 ounce of fragrance per pound of gel. Use a scale to weigh everything!

8.      Add dye. One drop at a time if using a pound of gel or more, and using the toothpick method if only making one candle. REMEMBER: a little goes a long way.

9.      Add UV Inhibitor. Recommended amount is 1 teaspoon per 5 lbs of gel or wax. Get it here   http://www.rusticescentuals.com/wicks.html

10.  When your gel reaches 220 degrees slowly pour it into the container. If you are using sand in your candle it may work best to pour the gel till just covering the sand and let it cool. Then you can pop the bubbles with a knife and then pour the rest of the gel. I have found that this helps reduce some of the bubbles in the finished candle.

11.  When the candle is cool, add a warning label to the bottom of your container.

12.  Clip the wick to ¼” above the gel.

13.  Clean up. You can clean up easily with hot soapy water. DO NOT let the gel go down the drain, it could clog it.
